Stacy Smith

Hello, my name is Stacy Smith I have been providing in Summit County in private practice for 15 years.  I have been providing services to adolescents, adults and families during my career.  I treat many different mental health issues through a person centered, family focused, humanistic approach.  As well I work with clients in their aging process, those who are facing end of life, as well as grieving individuals and families.  I have created a grief and loss program which has supported members of our community and surrounding areas for 7 years.  The other half of my career is as an adjunct professor at Colorado Mountain College where I teach classes such as The Psychology of Death and Dying, Human Sexuality and Human Growth and Development.

Elizabeth Blank
Executive Director/Therapy Team

My name is Elizabeth Sheaffer. I was born and raised in Evergreen, Colorado, and have lived in Summit County since 2015. I Graduated with a Masters Degree in Clinical Mental Health from Adams State University in May 2020! I was fortunate to have Stacy Smith as my supervisor over the last few years where I was introduced to working with children who are impacted by death. I am passionate about helping individuals feel connected, important, and loved, especially in times of grief. It is an honor to be a volunteer with such an amazing group of professionals. On a career matching test, my #1 match was "Outdoor Therapist," and that is what I do at Club Forget Me Not! My official title is Director of Adventure, and I love filling that role! Club Forget Me Not is my dream job!

Matt Fishman
Leader/Volunteer Team

Hello all!  My name is Matt.  I am currently a physical therapy student at the University of Colorado in Denver.  When I’m not studying, I enjoy skiing, hiking, playing guitar, riding my bike, and playing board games.  I got involved in grief counseling and support in the community when I lived in Summit County from 2013-2015.  My older brother died suddenly when I was 15.  I felt alone and like no one could understand what I was going through when I was grieving.  I don’t want anyone to feel that way, so it gives me such joy and hope to be able to offer community and support for a group of people going through unimaginable difficulty.  Some of the absolute brightest moments of my life have come from working with this program and I’m beyond thrilled that I get to be a part of it.  Working with this program has allowed me to process and work through my own loss and, even better, to use my experience to help others experiencing loss of their own.

Megan Matza
Teacher/Volunteer Team

Hello all ~ I’m Megan, a long time Summit County resident, early child hood professional, friend, crazy cat lady, and involved community member. I enjoy your typical Summit County activities... biking, camping, snowboarding, XC skiing and more. My passion for cooking and entertaining keeps me constantly busy a long with my everyday career and non profit work.

In 2001, I was 15, living in Texas with my mom, step dad and brother, when we got the news about my mother being diagnosed with ovarian cancer... at this point it was “the worst day of my life”. The following year was full of doctors visits, chemotherapy treatments, rushing to the ER in the middle of the night, long hospital stays (the list goes on) and growing up too fast. On December 16, 2002 my mother lost her battle to Ovarian Cancer and quickly this day became the worst day of my life... My. Mom. Was. Dead.

The months following are a blur; I moved to Colorado to live full time with my dad. I started a new school. I had a hard time making friends. It snowed here... a lot! They didn’t play softball in the fall here. No one I knew had ever had a parent die. I didn’t feel comfortable telling people the “real” reason I had moved... so I lied. I was alone. I felt as though I would never make it out of this, I would never overcome this.

I was wrong!!! Here I am years later living my best life. I am happy and successful, I have friends and hobbies. Life did go on and I am making the best of it. My hope is to be an example to children who are going thru a similar experience that their life WILL be ok, they will heal, there is happiness to have despite all the dark and sad moments.

Being able to give back to my community thru volunteering with Forget Me Not has been a huge help in my healing and grieving process. I am so thankful for the opportunity to be able to turn “the worst day of my life” into a wonderful experience and to be able to give strength, support and love to kids going thru a similar situation.
